Biden Emphasizes Global Nature of Ukraine Crisis During Quad Meeting

Biden said on Tuesday that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a global issue, which underlines the importance of international order, territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Biden emphasized his view that the Ukraine conflict is a global matter during the opening of the Quad meeting in Tokyo, a day after he pledged U.S. military support for Taiwan in case of a Chinese assault.
Biden stressed Washington would stand with its allies and push for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
He said international and human rights should always be defended no matter where they’re violated in the world.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Zelenskiy told leaders in Davos that the world must push more economic sanctions on Russia to deter other countries from making similar moves to achieve their aims.
The EU is expected to reach an agreement on an oil import ban on Russia. Germany said the agreement could be reached within days. Russia, on the other hand, states that its isolation from the West would strengthen its economic relations with China.
Kyiv has been critical of the EU for not moving quickly enough to halt Russian energy, which many of the EU’s 27 member states are heavily reliant on.
Hungary has been the only member left to block the ban on Russian oil and demands energy investment before it agrees to an embargo, clashing with EU states pushing for swift approval. The EU has offered up to €2 billion to central and eastern nations lacking non-Russian supply.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said the Kremlin would focus on developing ties with China as economic links with the United States and Europe were cut.
Lavrov said if the West wants to offer something to resume relations, Russia will consider whether it wants it or not.
Russia’s three-month long invasion, the biggest attack on a European state since 1945, has seen over 6.5 million people flee abroad, turned entire cities into rubble, and prompted the unprecedented imposition of Western sanctions on Russia.
