U.S. President Joe Biden revealed his plans to designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally during Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani’s visit to Washington. During the meeting of two leaders, President Biden said he plans to notify the Congress soon on the designation, which is granted to close, non-NATO allies that have a strategic and military partnership with the United States.
The U.S. has asked Qatar, the world’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas, to divert supplies to Europe if the conflict in Ukraine further disrupts deliveries from Russia.
The two leaders’ agenda also included the Iran nuclear talks and relations with Afghanistan, where the U.S. is represented by Qatar.
Sheikh Tamim also met with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to discuss arms sales and other military matters.
President Biden also said he and the emir held talks to strengthen commercial and investment cooperation.
