Electra Aims to Build North America’s First Facility to Exclusively Produce EV Battery Materials

Canada’s First Cobalt changes name to Electra Battery Materials and announced that it aims to build North America’s first site to produce electric vehicle (EV) battery materials. Automotive manufacturers have been looking to increase and expand their EV product range and need easy access to EV battery metals such as cobalt and nickel.

While nickel and cobalt are already produced in North America, Electra’s facility will be the first that is dedicated solely on producing EV battery materials. The company does not just aim to produce battery grade nickel and cobalt but precursor chemicals cathode component of the batteries as well.

Electra projects that it could start producing cobalt sulphate by the fourth quarter of 2022. Electra said global EV supply chain was too long and automakers were looking for localization of the supply chain.

If the company secures nickel for its nickel sulphate facility in 2024-2025, together with its short term cobalt output it could supply more than 1.5 million EVs annually.

Albemarle Aims to Double Lithium Production with New U.S. Plant

Albemarle plans to build a lithium processing plant in the U.S. that would produce as much the battery metal as the entire company produces today. The plan shows the company’s ambition to pioneer the U.S. lithium revival from mine development to processing to manufacturing types of the metal used to make high-end EV batteries.

Tripling Lithium Prices Force Consumers to Seek Longer Contracts

Consumers in the electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain have been looking for longer term contracts for lithium, as shortages have caused lithium prices to their highest in three years. The price of lithium carbonate, a key material for rechargeable batteries, has seen a 276% increase since the start of this year, reaching $30,940/tonne. Accelerating sales of EVs has resulted in a booming demand.
