GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, the joint venture of General Electric and Hitachi, has agreed to build a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR9 with Canadian utility company Ontario Power Generation (OPG). OPG will establish the SMR at its Darlington site where it has a license to build a nuclear power facility. According to a press release, the company expects to complete it in 2028
SMRs are made in factories and can be transported to power plants for installation, which makes them cheaper than conventional nuclear plants. for SMRs has been growing as nations try to cut carbon emissions.
Canada targets a coal phase out by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
SMRs have capacity of up to 300MWe per unit, a third of conventional reactors. 15% of Canada’s power comes from 19 nuclear reactors, mostly in Ontario with a total production of 13.5 GWe.
