Poland has announced earlier this year that it wanted to buy 250 Abrams tanks from General Dynamic, and hoped the deliveries could begin as early as 2022. However, company CEO Phebe Novakovic said the sale could go through in two years. Novakovic said this was a powerful system for the Poles to have and came under the category of foreign military sale (FMS).
She added that General Dynamics was also attracting interest from other countries like Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, and Denmark as well as the Middle East. Novakovic added that the US demand was going stable as well with orders for Abrams tanks and Stryker combat vehicles.
Mariusz Błaszczak, Polish Minister of Defense, was clear about why they wanted Abrams tanks. He said Poland wanted to order “most modern tanks. Tanks available in the best equipped version, tanks that are combat proven, tanks which were constructed to counter the most modern Russian T-14 Armata tanks.”
The potential sale has also taken support from the Congress. Congress members approved Poland’s decision to buy the tanks in the fiscal defense policy bill.
Poland has been aiming to modernize its militay with a focus on interoperability with the US forces.
