U.S. Increases Defense Diplomacy Posture in Taiwan

Biden sent a delegation of former defense and security officials to Taipei on Tuesday to hold talks with Taiwanese president. The visit, which comes in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is denounced by Chinese government officials.

The visit comes at a time when Taiwan raised its alert level, fearing China could take advantage of the West distracted in Europe and move against the island.

Beijing claims the island as part of its own territory and has vowed to control it, by force if necessary.

The U.S. delegation will meet President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday.

China considers Taiwan as the most important issue in its relations with the United States, and any high level interaction angers Beijing.

A U.S. warship sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, as part of what U.S. military called routine activity but which China described as provocative.

Germany Completes Uniper Nationalization

Germany decided to nationalize utility company Uniper after the government’s earlier multi-billion bailout failed to save the country’s top gas importer and Putin sent oil prices higher by announcing a partial Russian military mobilization. The German government agreed to buy the remaining stakes, which was owned by Finland’s Fortum, in Uniper to secure its operations and keep its business afloat, as a latest effort to keep electricity and gas flowing in Europe’s biggest economy.
