China’s CATL introduces new fast-charging LFP battery

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd) has introduced a new fast charging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery named Shenxing, capable of running 400 km (248 miles) on just a 10-minute charge. The company plans to begin mass production of this new battery by the end of the year, with electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with Shenxing batteries expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2024.

CATL’s Chief Technology Officer of E-Car Business, Gao Han, mentioned that the company’s goal is for Shenxing to become a standard product available for a wide range of electric vehicles. This new battery technology could significantly reduce charging times and make EVs more practical for longer trips.

CATL has been a major player in the battery industry and is a supplier to various automakers, including Tesla. However, the company has been facing challenges in maintaining its market leadership due to weakening demand and cost pressures in the EV industry. The rise of competitors like BYD and the trend of some automakers sourcing batteries from smaller suppliers to reduce costs have affected CATL’s market share.

This move by CATL to introduce a fast charging LFP battery could help the company regain its edge in the competitive battery market and meet the growing demand for more efficient and faster-charging EVs.

Study reveals Atacama Salt Flat sinking due to lithium extraction

A recent study by the University of Chile has revealed that the Atacama salt flat is sinking at a rate of 1 to 2 centimeters (0.4 to 0.8 inches) per year due to lithium brine extraction. The research, published in the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing journal, utilized satellite data from Argentina’s SAOCOM-1…

Schwedt crisis averted for now, but Germany’s oil reroute remains fragile

Germany is trying to contain what could have become a serious fuel-supply shock around Berlin by stitching together replacement crude flows for the PCK Schwedt refinery after Russia said it would halt deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline from May 1. The immediate picture is less severe than feared: Brandenburg officials said up to 80% of Schwedt’s crude needs are secured for May, allowing the refinery to keep operating at a relatively stable level while Berlin searches for additional barrels.

The background matters here because Schwedt has been one of Germany’s most politically sensitive refineries since the rupture with Russian energy after 2022. The plant is crucial to fuel supply in northeastern Germany and parts of Poland, and it has already been operating in a more fragile way since Germany took control of the refinery from Rosneft in 2022 without fully resolving the ownership issue.

Rising gas prices push European industries toward diesel and fuel oil

The recent surge in European natural gas prices is making it more cost-effective for industries to switch to oil, potentially increasing demand for petroleum products across the region. On Monday, natural gas prices exceeded the equivalent of $100 per barrel, a two-year high, prompting industries to explore alternative fuels like diesel and fuel oil where feasible…
